My Teaching Philosophy
I am like the leader on an outdoor wilderness adventure: that kind of adventure where there is running, climbing, and jumping; obstacles to be gotten over, under, and around; that kind of character-building experience in which groups of people accomplish together what they could never accomplish on their own. As the group leader for this adventure, I must motivate students, communicate expectations of success, encourage students to help each other, and ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed. My course will challenge students and they will meet that challenge. The adventure will include a grand finale, in which participants use all the skills they have acquired. By the end, students will feel empowered and able to go beyond the course to explore new topics on their own. Thus, my teaching is based upon the fundamental goal of empowering students.
